What is Geo-Structural Engineering?

Geo-structural engineering combines geotechnical and structural principles to design and analyze temporary and permanent systems that support and interact with the surrounding ground. It involves creating safe and efficient solutions for foundations, SOE systems, tunnels and many other systems—critical components of infrastructure in our modern world. This specialty requires creativity and understanding of geotechnical and structural engineering principals to solve complex challenges in underground construction, with a particular emphasis on practical approaches to generate designs that are safe, economical, and constructible.

Responsibilities

  • Assist senior engineers with the design of foundations, SOE, falsework, tunnels, underground structures and other types of permanent and temporary geo-structural systems and components, generally consisting of the following tasks:
    • Evaluate and select geotechnical and loading parameters
    • Develop concepts and prepare sketches based on provided information and constraints
  • Analyze and design steel, reinforced concrete, wood, and other structures according to relevant building codes and industry standards while using engineering software and various calculation tools and methods
  • Prepare design calculations, sketches, reports, and specifications
  • Supervise creation of CAD/BIM drawings and models
  • Collaborate with other Brierley engineers and professionals on projects, pursuits, and company initiatives
  • Assist in client contact and communication pertaining to specific projects
  • Assist in development of design budgets and schedules and effectively manage time and effort to maintain budgets and schedules
  • Make construction site visits to gather information or observe ongoing work
  • Represent the Company in professional, technical, and business organizations

 

Qualifications

  • BS in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program (MS preferred)
  • Degree shall have a structural engineering focus with basic coursework in geotechnical engineering, OR geotechnical focus with basic coursework in structural engineering
  • Applicable courses include steel design, reinforced concrete design, prestressed concrete design, timber design, finite element analysis, soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and foundations
  • Highly motivated and possess excellent interpersonal, organizational, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and work under strict deadlines
  • Experience with the following software is preferred:
  • Finite element analysis software such as RISA, SAP2000, STAAD, Plaxis, Flac, MIDAS, or others
  • Computer aided drafting software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, or others
  • Willingness to travel for short-term field assignments
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam is preferred
  • Ability and commitment to obtain PE or SE license within 4 years
