Innovative Box Jacking Method for Tunnel Design to be Presented at South Central North American Society for Trenchless Technology (NASTT)

Box Tunnel being pulled under active rail lines-Rotterdam Junction, NY- Designed by Brierley Associates

Nick Strater, PG, will present “Box Jacking, Trenchless Methods for Big Tunnels – Connecting the Empire State” at the upcoming NASTT South Central Trenchless Conference on September 14, 2021. The conference takes place at the Sugar Land Town Centre Marriot Hotel & Conference Center in Sugar Land, Texas.

The design/build project featured the installation by pulling, not pushing the pre-fabricated reinforced concrete box tunnel below an active railroad line to keep the embankment in compression. The pedestrian tunnel finishes the connection of existing stretches of the Empire State Trail System that traverses from New York City to the Canadian Border via the Hudson River Valley Greenway and Champlain Canalway Trail and from Buffalo to Albany via the Erie Canalway Trail. More information about the Empire State Trail Box Tunnel can be found here.
