Mid-Level Geotechnical / Geologic / Civil Engineer

Salary Range: $88k – $131k (The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location)

Work With a Team Solving Some of the Most Complex Geohazard, Underground, and Infrastructure Challenges in North America

Brierley Associates is expanding our geohazard, abandoned mine land, and slope stability practices and seeking a motivated Mid-Level Engineer who wants to work on technically challenging, high-impact projects across surface and underground environments. You will join a collaborative team of geotechnical engineers, engineering geologists, tunnel and trenchless specialists, and rock mechanics experts who work together to design solutions that protect infrastructure, support contractors, and reduce risk for public and private clients.

Our work includes:

  • Landslide, rockfall, highwall, and embankment stabilization
  • Mine fire abatement and highwall stability
  • LiDAR, InSAR, GIS and remote sensing–driven hazard mapping
  • Soft and hard rock subsidence investigations and mitigation
  • DOT and state AML geohazard programs
  • Mine shaft portal, adit, and shaft closures
  • Geohazards mapping, analysis, and modeling
  • Ground condition and behavioral assessment for underground projects
  • Ground improvement, earthwork, excavation shoring, and earth retention systems
  • Geomorphic reclamation and hydraulic structures design

This role offers the opportunity to develop deep technical specialization, gain real design ownership, and advance quickly within a culture that values autonomy, initiative, and professional growth.

Why This Role Stands Out:

  • You’ll work on complex geohazard and underground engineering projects, not just routine geotechnical assignments.
  • You’ll contribute directly to high-profile, multidisciplinary infrastructure and heavy civil projects across the U.S.
  • You’ll have clear pathways toward Project Engineer, Senior Engineer, or PM roles. You’ll work in a culture that values innovation, hands-on engineering, practicality, engineering judgement, and entrepreneurial thinking. If you want a role that blends above-ground geohazard engineering with the underground expertise Brierley is known for, this is a unique opportunity.

Requirements:

  • BS or higher required in Geotechnical, Geological, Civil, Mining Engineering or closely related field
  • 3–6+ years of relevant experience
  • PE license (any state) or ability to obtain Illinois PE within twelve (12) months if experience and education level allows for professional licensure
  • Strong technical writing, organization, and communication skills
  • Mentorship and coordination and development for junior staff
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • Willingness to travel for site work and short-term assignments
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation

What You Will Do:

  • Geohazard & Slope Stability Engineering
  • Perform limit-equilibrium and numerical slope modeling (soil & rock)
  • Conduct kinematic/structural analyses for rock slopes
  • Design geohazard mitigation systems:
    • Soil nails, rock bolts, anchors
    • Rockfall barriers, attenuators, mesh systems
    • Buttresses, retaining walls, drainage systems, horizontal drains
    • Embankment stabilization, modification, and erosion/scour protection measures
    • Erosion and scour protection measures and systems
  • Civil/Geostructural Integration
    • Incorporate roadway, drainage, utility, erosion/scour, and site-civil design considerations and data into embankment, slope, and highwall stabilization projects, hydraulic structure design, and underground designs
    • Support design of excavation shoring, earth retention, and support-of-excavation systems
  • Deliverables & Technical Leadership
    • Prepare engineering reports, calculations, cross-sections, alternatives analyses, plans, and technical memoranda
    • Oversee development of CAD/BIM drawings, 3D models, and construction-ready plan sets/specifications
    • Support project budgeting, scheduling, task management, and client relations
  • Field Engineering & Construction Oversight
    • Conduct field investigations, geologic mapping, and geotechnical reconnaissance
    • Provide construction-phase support for geohazard abetment projects
    • Participate in instrumentation and monitoring programs (inclinometers, piezos, extensometers, remote sensing) including design and data interpretation
  • Professional Engagement
    • Represent Brierley in client meetings, professional societies, and technical committees
    • Contribute to technical presentations and business development initiatives

What We Offer:

  • A culture that values technical excellence, mentorship, and innovation
  • A broad and diverse project portfolio across the U.S.
  • Rapid career progression opportunities
  • Competitive compensation and performance-based bonuses
