Design Build Landslide Remediation

Crookston, MN

Phillip Burgmeier, PE

Kristopher Burnham September 2003, a six-acre landslide occurred between U.S. Trunk Highway 2 (TH 2) and Red Lake River in Crookston, Minnesota. Historically, a slide that had occurred at the same location in the 1930s resulted in loss of homes and a motel. The 2003 landslide scarp was approximately 20-ft high and adjacent to the south side of TH 2.  Given the location of the scarp, the busy corridor and adjoining homes were threatened. In response to the slide, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) undertook a monitoring program with the obective of developing a conceptual site model relative to slide mechanisms.

4,100-ft HDD Completed - Design by Brierley Associates

Anne Arundel County, MD

Nick Strater, PG Mayo Water Reclamation Facility operated by Anne Arundel County receives septic tank effluent via a pump station system from Mayo peninsula residents. Unfortunately, the service area has reached capacity and the County imposed a moratorium on future development.  GHD was selected by Anne Arundel County to assist with alternative analysis, project planning and design. GHD in-turn subcontracted with Brierley Associates to assist with trenchless concept development and design.

Lake Mead Intake No. 3 Wins Global Tunnel Project of the Year Award at the 2015 NCE Tunneling and Underground Space Awards in London Associates is proud to be a member of the ARUP design team that supported the Salini-Impregilo/SA Healy JV team that constructed Lake Mead Intake No 3. Brierley Associates provided geotechnical engineering services for the project and led the design of  a 30-ft diameter, 600-ft deep tunnel access shaft and the 50-ft wide by 50-ft tall and 300-ft long TBM-starter chamber. Challenging ground conditions ranged from Precambrian crystalline metamorphic rock having Tertiary igneous intrusive rock units to   sandy conglomerate and gravelly sandstone. Completion of the third intake will safeguard the future water supply, to this fast growing region of the southwest United States.

NEW TO THE DENVER OFFICE Associates welcomes Heather Stewart to our Denver, Colorado office. Heather is a registered professional engineer in California and has significant geotechnical engineering experience with an emphasis on providing design and construction support services for tunnel projects. Heather grew up in Prince Edward Island, Canada and holds Bachelor of Applied Science and Masters of Engineering degrees in Geological Engineering from the University of British Columbia. Ms. Stewart's strengths include ground characterization of soil and rock; tunnel and shaft excavation and initial support design; slope stability analysis; geotechnical engineering design, geologic mapping and on-site construction support. Having lived by the ocean her entire life, Heather likes to sail, sea kayak, and scuba dive. With her recent move to Denver, these activities are currently taking a backseat to backpacking and skiing.

THE DENVER OFFICE CONTINUES TO GROW Associates welcomes Christian (Chris) Karns to the Denver, Colorado office. He adds a positive "can-do" attitude and passion for engineering. Chris was raised in remote Florissant, Colorado where visits to historic Cripple Creek mines and tunnels sparked an interest in underground engineering. While studying Mining Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines, Chris interned with the U.S. Geological Survey. This learning opportunity allowed Chris to expand his knowledge of  geology and mining history. Working as a Lab Assistant at the Earth Mechanics Institute (EMI), Chris refined his attention to detail and data reduction skills. He  was brought on as an intern at Brierley in May 2015. It was evident that Chris' drive and work ethic were a good fit with the Brierley family. Chris is currently working toward earning his EIT and eventual Professional Engineer licensure.

Chris may be contacted in our Denver, CO office at 303.703.1405 or by e-mail at
