Creating Space Underground

World Record HDD

City of Miami Beach, FL

Brian Dorwart, PE, PG existing 54-inch diameter Pre-Stressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe (PCCP) sanitary sewer force main is a vital asset for the City of Miami Beach, as it connects to the Government Cut forcemain and conveys the entire flow of the city to the waste water treatment plant on Virginia Key. However, condition assessments revealed corrosion had set in and caused failure in some of the pipe segments. Rather than removing and replacing the existing line, a new redundant forcemain was decided upon to allow repair work to occur without jeopardizing operations.

Tapping Lake Travis

Lewis Yates, PE

Kevin Mandeville, PG after the construction of the Mansfield Dam on the Colorado River, Lake Travis serves as an important water resource for the growing population of central Texas. Water purveyor, Brushy Creek Regional Utility Authority (BCRUA) is a local government partnership formed in 2005 by the Cities of Cedar Park, Leander, and Round Rock, all located just north of Austin. BCRUA has embarked on a multiple year program to increase capacity and manage concerns associated with historic low water levels of Lake Travis experienced during the September 2013 through September 2015 timeframe.

River Supply Conduit Improvement Upper Reach - Units 5 & 6

North Hollywood, CA

Sean Harvey, PG, CEG completed later this year by SAK Construction (SAK) for Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), the River Supply Conduit Improvement Upper Reach (RSCIUR) Units 5 and 6 will result in the construction of almost approximately 15,770 feet of new 78-inch diameter water pipe. This improvement project is a component of a program to construct new water storage facilities and install up to 30,000 feet of new distribution pipelines. Construction of this important water conveyance via open trench and tunneling within a highly urbanized alignment can be challenging. Brierley Associates has been retained by SAK of St. Louis, Missouri, to provide a variety of construction engineering services related to over 10,350-ft of tunneling.
