54-inch HDPE-HDD Project Honored

Miami Beach, Florida


Each year the Cuban American Association of Civil Engineers and the Association of Cuban-American Engineers host a gala to celebrate the profession and accomplishments of the prior year. The 56th Annual Gala was held on March 25, 2017 at the Miami Hilton Airport. This year the 54-inch diameter HDD Redundant Force Main was honored with the Project of the Year in the $10-$20Million construction cost category.


Brian Dorwart of Brierley Associates served as Engineer-of-Record for the HDD Design on this challenging and record setting project constructed by David Mancini & Sons, Inc. Members of the project team that were honored that evening include:


  • David Mancini - President - David Mancini & Sons, Inc.

·        Bruce Mowry, PhD, PE - City of Miami Beach Engineer received the Luis P. Saenz Engineer of the Year Award. Dr. Mowry's foresight was instrumental to project success.

  • Carlos Gil-Mera, PE - Principal at A&P Consulting Transportation Engineers, received the Ing. Plinio Villanueva Award. A&P served as overall Civil Engineer for the project and provided a wide spectrum of services.

San Diego County Water Authority's Emergency and Carryover Storage Project



Brierley Associates congratulates Jerry Reed III, P.E., M.ASCE, director of engineering for the San Diego County Water Authority, who accepted the prestigious award on March 16, 2017. The Emergency and Carryover Storage Project is more than a single project, it is a collection of dams, reservoirs, tunnel and pump stations that were constructed over the course of almost 25 years.


Numerous design and construction companies played key roles in the success of the overall project program, including Brierley Associates' Gregg Sherry, David Berti and Eric Lindquist. Gregg served as Tunnel Engineer for the San Vicente Pipeline an 11-mile, 12-foot-diameter tunnel with an 8.5-foot-diameter pipeline completed in 2011.   Eric and David provided contractor engineering services on San Vicente Dam Raise Package 2 - Foundation Preparatory Work and Package 3 - Roller Compacted Concrete Dams and Appurtenant Facilities.



Pilot Tube Method Gets New Manual of Practice

A group of dedicated engineers, owners, suppliers, manufacturers and contractors have been working over the past three years to write a Manual of Practice (MOP) on Pilot Tube and Other Guided Boring Methods. The MOP has been assigned the number 133 and is scheduled for release in July. The principal authors of the MOP include Jeff Boschert, Glenn Boyce, Dennis Doherty, Andrew Finney, Richard Palmer, Troy Stokes, and Brierley's, Nick Strater.




Lymon C. Reese Lecture and Golf Tournament


The Lymon C. Reese Distinguished Lecture is sponsored by the Cockrell School of Engineering through the University of Texas at Austin.  Once a year, UT invites a distinguished speaker to the event in honor of Dr. Reese who passed away in September of 2009.  Dr. Reese began his career as a professor at the University of Texas in Austin in 1955 and was inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Alumni on November 7, 2003.   Dr. Reese is a pioneer in the field of instrumented piles and drilled shafts.  The analytical methods that Dr. Reese developed in his field of studies continue to be used worldwide.


The 2017 distinguished lecturer was Dr. Mark Randolph - Fugro Chair in Geotechnics. As part of the event, an industry expo was held and Brierley Associates were there to meet UT graduate students and network with other industry professionals.


Brierley was also a Silver Level Partner of the 9th Annual Lymon C. Reese Memorial Golf Tournament held at Falconhead Golf Club on Saturday, April 29th, 2017.  The Brierley team members included: Dr. Chadi S. Mohtar (UT engineering professor), Jakob Walter (UT grad student), Andrew Johnson (HDR), and Kevin Mandeville (Brierley Associates).  Everyone had a blast!

Our Denver Office Welcomes Robert Mascarenas


Brierley Associates welcomes Robert Mascarenas to the Denver, Colorado office.  Robert has six-years of experience as a project manager in the deep foundation industry, specializing in the construction of large diameter drilled shafts, rammed aggregate piers, and retaining walls. Before that he managed stormwater infrastructure projects, wetland mitigation oversight, and water treatment facility construction. Robert grew up in Lakewood, Colorado. He has a BS in Environmental Science from Metropolitan State University of Denver and will receive a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with a geotechnical emphasis from University of Colorado Denver in December 2017.  Robert may be contacted in our Denver, Colorado office at 303.703.1405 or by e-mail at
